Detroit Red Wings: Seven Reasons Why Detroit Is Set for a Playoff Run

The Wings are in the stretch run of their 2010-11 season as they near the beginning of the month of April.

The playoff feel is in the air and games become more crucial.

The Wings are amidst a five game home stand that is set to end tonight against the Central Division’s last place team the St. Louis Blues.

Currently, the record for the home stand stands at 1-1-2.

Although that record is nothing to go crazy about, digging deeper the games have been great and the crowds have been even better.

To open up the home stand, the Wings looked like they were on their way to a blow out loss against the Pittsburgh Penguins losing 4-0 nothing with less than five minutes to play in the second until Henrik Zetterberg put the team on the board. A crazy third period saw the Wings score three more goals to tie the game to grab a point in the shootout loss that, in essence, they did not really deserve.

The second game saw the best team in the league, the Vancouver Canucks, come into the Joe. The game was fast paced and was a true testament of the two best Western Conference teams battling it out. Both Roberto Luongo and Jimmy Howard had a goalie battle in their respectful creases but Detroit came up just short losing 2-1 in regulation.

On Saturday, the hated Toronto Maple Leafs came in and the Wings showed their poise beating the Leafs 4-2 in a game that all but ended the Leafs hopes of making the playoffs.

On Monday, the even more hated Chicago Blackhawks came in and the game was nothing short of great. The teams traded goals throughout regulation but the Hawks had the final push in overtime as ex-Wing Marian Hossa ended the game 51 seconds into the extra frame as the Wings were stuck killing a penalty that was called with three seconds left in regulation (thanks, Brad Watson).

Which brings us to tonight, which should be an easy game for the Wings.

After tonight’s game, the Wings will have just five games remaining in the regular season and will be ready to gear in what hopes to be a very long playoff run.

The season has seen it’s fair share of ups and downs but the Wings should be ready for success this summer.

The following slide show depicts the reasons why the Red Wings, and their fans, should be looking forward to a great playoff in which hopes to end with the Stanley Cup back where it belongs.
