John Jaeckel: UPDATE: Lee Rumor Might Have No Legs
Classic misinformation in the internet era.
I received an email from a source in Canada this morning saying he had heard rumors of a deal sending Senators’ defenseman Brian Lee to the Blackhawks. And, in fact, the possibility of such a deal was apparently discussed this morning in the Canadian media.
There were no internet reports as such, but lo and behold, a 27 year old American defensema…
John Jaeckel: RUMOR: Hawks Acquire Brian Lee from Ottawa
Rumor out of Canada this morning that the Blackhawks have acquired or are about to acquire Senators defenseman Brian Lee. I can find nothing concrete on it one way or the other at this point.
At least two media outlets (ESPN Sportsnet) now has Lee listed as Hawks property.

In the midst of a five-game losing streak, the Ottawa Senators fan base remained hopeful that the arrival of a mortal enemy in the Toronto Maple Leafs would be the ultimate streak killer. After all, if a team can’t get up for its geographic and divisional rival on Hockey Night in Canada – well, what game can it get up for?
Unfortunately…
Maple Leafs 5, Senators 0
James Reimer posted his second straight shutout, and Phil Kessel and Tyler Bozak each had three points to lead the Toronto Maple Leafs to a 5-0 rout of the Ottawa Senators on Saturday night.
Kessel and Bozak each had a goal and two assists, while Dion Phaneuf, Luke Schenn and Cody Franson also scored for Toronto. Reimer stopped 49 shots for his third shutout of the season and has now made 74 saves in his last two games.
Craig Anderson, making his 17th straight start and 50th appearance, had little help from his teammates as he faced 40 shots.
Ottawa fell to 3-2-0 against Toronto this year.
Maple Leafs vs. Senators Goes From Huge to Massive
(Getty Images)
By Lukas Hardonk (@LukasHardonk)
Tonight’s game between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Ottawa Senators just became that much more important for both teams.
Earlier today, the Washington Capitals pulled into a tie for the eighth and final playoff spot with the Maple Leafs with a 3-0 victory over the Montreal Canadiens. To go along with that Caps’ victory, the New Jersey Devils held off the Philadelphia Flyers 6-4 today, moving them into a tie for sixth with the Senators.
With all four of those teams─the Leafs, Senators, Capitals and Devils─fighting for one of the few playoff spots available, every game becomes that much more important, but they become crucial when they are against one of those other teams. That’s exactly the kind of game that the Leafs and Senators are preparing for tonight.
If the Leafs win, or even lose in overtime or a shootout for that matter, they will reclaim sole possession of eighth in the Eastern Conference and sit just one …
Dennis Seidenberg’s Tie-Breaking Goal Against Senators Takes Captain Morgan Goal of the Week Honors
Tyler Seguin turned 20 years old the same night the Bruins topped the Senators in a hard-fought battle between two Northeast division rivals. The win was surely a great birthday present for the young forward. The difference in the 4-3 Boston win was a long-range, sniper shot from the stick of Dennis Seidenberg. After passing back and forth with Joe Corvo, Seidenberg reared back and ripped a shot from 90 feet out. The puck took a friendly skip and went past Senators netminder Craig Anderson. Seidenberg’s score from distance also won this week’s Captain Morgan Goal of the Week. Check…
Ken Beckett: Maple Leafs Game Day – Game 52: Leafs vs. Senators
After earning three of four points in a back-to-back earlier this week, the Toronto Maple Leafs return to action as they visit the nation’s capital to take on the Ottawa Senators.
This is the fifth of six installments in the ‘Battle of Ontario’ this season. The Senators have won three-straight against the Leafs after Toronto won the first game of the season series. Ottawa’s most recent win was…
Islanders’ Eaton scores OT winner in 600th game
Mark Eaton’s latest goal was as important to the New York Islanders as it was rare for him to score.
Eaton scored 2:35 into overtime in his 600th NHL game to give the Islanders a 2-1 win over the Ottawa Senators on Friday night.
The 34-year-old defenseman took a pass from Milan Jurcina and put the puck into an open right side for his 24th NHL goal – his first since Nov. 28, 2009.
”The circumstance is the big thing. We’re just trying to get points and keep climbing up the standings,” Eaton said. ”Every point’s big and for it to be an OT winner makes it a little more memorable.”
Matt Martin scored the tying goal in the third and Evgeni Nabokov made 23 saves for New York, which is on a 5-1-1 run.
The Islanders tied Tampa Bay for 11th in the Eastern Conference with 49 points, nine points behind eighth-place Toronto, which plays in Ottawa on Saturday night.
”We play Buffalo at home (Saturday) and we’re a confident bunch right now,” said P.A. Parenteau, who assisted on both goals. ”We play with a lot of passion and we know what’s at stake in the next two weeks. Nothing’s impossible for us.”
John Tavares, chosen the NHL’s first star of the month on Wednesday, failed to record a point for the second time in four games following a 12-game points streak. The Islanders’ first overall pick in the 2009 draft had nine goals and 13 assists for 22 points in 13 games in January, including four in a 5-2 win at Carolina on Tuesday.
”Obviously it was a pretty tight hockey game and a big game for both teams,” Tavares said. ”We came back, down by a goal, and it was nice to see a guy like Mark Eaton – who has done a lot of great things for us this year, the little things that don’t get a lot of the press – score, and it’s a nice win for us.”
Zack Smith scored a short-handed goal late in the second for the Senators, who have lost five in a row, the last four in regulation.
Ottawa’s Craig Anderson stopped 30 shots in his 16th straight start.
”Their play without the puck in the neutral zone was better than ours,” Senators coach Paul MacLean said.
Smith scored with 12.6 seconds left in the second. The Ottawa center carried the puck out of his zone and raced down the ice before taking a wrist shot from the top of the left faceoff circle. Nabokov got his glove on the shot but the puck carried on and flew behind him into the net.
Martin tied it 5:27 into the third. Parenteau drew Senators defensemen Sergei Gonchar and Jared Cowen to the left side before feeding a pass to the right side of the slot, where Martin was left unguarded to fire a wrist shot past Anderson for his sixth goal.
Jurcina went to the dressing room 8:16 into the third after he was attended to on the ice by a trainer. Jurcina, who landed on his backside following a hit by former teammate Zenon Konopka behind the New York net, quickly returned.
The game was delayed with 9.7 seconds remaining in regulation because of a broken curved glass panel at the far end of the Senators’ bench.
NOTES: Former Islanders stars Denis Potvin and Billy Smith were introduced to the crowd and shown on the video scoreboard during the game. Potvin is an analyst on Senators TV broadcasts and Smith watched from the stands. … The Senators’ five-game homestand is their longest of the season. … C Jim O’Brien made his season debut for Ottawa after he was recalled from AHL Binghamton earlier in the day. RW Bobby Butler was left out of the lineup.

A return to home ice after a grueling west coast road-trip was supposed to spell the end of a recent slide for the Ottawa Senators. They may have earned a point in tonight’s effort, but once again found themselves in the wrong column, bested by the New York Islanders 2-1 [OT] at Scotiabank Place.
While neither team was impressive at all d…
Suddenly The Senators Can’t Win Games
Have the Ottawa Senators finally returned to Earth? Has reality set in?The Eastern Conference’s most pleasant surprise is mired in its first four-game losing streak of the season. First-line center Jason Spezza scored zero points during that downturn.“Our whole line, the last four games we haven’t produced offensively and we’ve lost,” Spezza told the Ottawa Sun. “So it’s no coincidence. We have to be good as a line offensively, too.”Winger Milan Michalek’s goal-scoring slump has reached eight games. “The season is long, there’s always ups and downs,” he told the Sun. “Sometimes you’re low. But I’m trying to stay positive. I think it’s going to turn around soon. I have to work hard and hopefully it’s going to come back soon.”Ottawa needs to regain its scoring touch during the upcoming five-game homestand. The Sens have an opportunity reestablish themselves as a playoff threat.&…
Karlsson Top Offensive Defenceman
It is quite an achievement that Erik Karlsson of the Ottawa Senators is the top scoring defenceman in the league. He currently has 48 points in 52 games played. This gives him a 12 point lead over any other defenceman in the league. This season is already his career best offensive total. That is quite an achievement for a 21 year old player.
Karlsson is playing against top competition. No other Senator regular plays against as tough competition. His +7 +/- rating is among the best in the NHL. He is starting to be seen as a solid Norris Trophy candidate. I would argue that three more well-rounded defencemen exist in front of him in Zdeno Chara, Shea Weber and Nicklas Lidstrom, but he is the best of the next group.

Dee Karl: Hello Ottawa! It’s Game Day
Good Morning Hockey Fans! We’ve got Hockey again! Today the Isles are back in Ottawa for the first time this season to see Daniel Alfredsson and company. It’s the first time this season and for some strange reason, the Sens have played four more games than the Isles. They stand at 60 points to the Isles 47. That’s a big gap.
John Tavares was the NHL’s first star of the month for Ja…
Kerry Fraser Responds to Referee Conspiracy Claims
In his latest blog that has been posted over on TSN’s website, former NHL referee Kerry Fraser responded to the concerns of the tinfoil hat wearing Senators fans who, for whatever reason, believed that a former league official would assure them that the fix was in. That in this case, two professional referees – Tim Peel and Dan O’Rourke – conspired and willingly ignored their own personal moral compass so that they could compromise the integrity of the game and ensure that Ottawa would lose? Hmm, that sounds completely reasonable. Let’s take a closer look at what was said in the article itself.
Jamie in Ottawa writes:
I can’t understand how the Sens are consistently the highest penalized team in the league. It is bordering on the ridiculous.
Well Jamie, thanks to the 282 penalties that have been called against them, the Senators have been shorthanded 211 times and have accumulated 754 minutes in penalties. This trio of statistics puts them atop the league in each cate…

A: Anderson…
Just as I was getting to ready to use some digital ink commenting on how Craig Anderson needs to keep up his recent play for the Senators to have any sustained success, he then let Dennis Seidenberg’s shot in from center ice. I think it’s in everyone’s best interests if I move on to something else.
B: Bibi’s 50-percent
At the conclusion of this weekend’s All-Star Game, Elliotte Friedman asked Daniel Alfredsson whether he would be open to returning for one more season. The captain’s response was, “Fifty percent yes, and my wife’s going to have to decide the other 50.”
Just say ‘ja’ Bibi. Just say ‘ja’.
C: Cue the Naysayers
For the first time this season, the Senators have now lost four consecutive games in regulation. Cue the insufferable open-mouth breathers who will chime in and say that the Senators are finally showing their true colours.
