NHL Trade Rumors: Will New York Rangers Trade for Big-Time Scorer?
The New York Rangers obtained the biggest unrestricted free agent on the market, center Brad Richards, but it looks like the team might not be done making moves.
There has been word from the people in and around the Rangers organization that the team is trying to move some of the defensive prospect depth for an experienced scoring forward.
One of the biggest names that has surfaced in possible trades has been Washington Capitals enigmatic forward Alexander Semin. Semin has came up small for the Capitals in the playoffs, and moving his large salary would be perfect for the Capitals to get under the Cap.
Fox Sports is reporting:
I would be shocked if Glen Sather isn’t kicking the tires on this one, as a line of Semin-Brad Richards-Marian Gaborik would be lethal. Or, to balance things out, a top two lines of Dubinsky-Richards-Gaborik and Semin-Artem Anisimov-Callahan would be lethal and balanced. An acquisition of Semin makes a statement that the Rangers are going for it, and they are going for it now. The more likely scenario is that the Caps deal a defenseman, but they may have to look into dealing Semin instead/as well.
As a top line possibility, Semin, Richards and Marian Gaborik would be one of the most dominating lines in the NHL. New York would have to spread that talent out a bit over the top two lines, but this configuration is very possible on the power play.
The problem is that Semin does the same disappearing act as Gaborik has in the past, and the consistency of the forwards on the team would lead to possible scoring droughts for the Rangers.
New York has a plethora of great defensive prospects in their system, and the fact that the Capitals need help in that department could be signify the beginning to a blockbuster trade.
