Scott Hannan, Calgary Flames Agree to One Year Contract
Scott Hannan—one of the bigger free agent defensemen available—has signed a one year deal with the Calgary Flames reportedly worth $1 million. Hannan, who was traded in November from the Colorado Avalanche to the Washington Capitals for Tomas Fleischmann, will join a defensive corps headed by veteran Jay Bouwmeester, former Stanley Cup winner Cory Sarich, and Mark Giordano. Calgary General Manager Jay Feaster had this to say about the signing:
“Scott not only brings a wealth of experience to our blue line, but he also brings a great deal of knowledge about the Western Conference in general and our division in particular. Just as importantly, he has demonstrated his commitment to our organization and his desire to be a part of our team by agreeing to a contract that enables us to fit him under the salary cap.”
It was theorized that Hannan hadn’t been picked up after a month and a half of free agency because he was looking for a long-term deal. This signing debunks that theory. Now with one of the biggest mysteries of free agency over with, focus turns towards other significant defensemen like Bryan McCabe, Chris Campoli, and Nick Boynton. Only time will tell where these veterans will end up come training camp.
