Winnipeg Jets Sign Mark Scheifele to Entry-Level Contract
It’s official: The Winnipeg Jets are doing the Scheifele Shuffle.
The Jets came to terms with prize rookie Mark Scheifele this morning, and he’s expected to be in the lineup when the club opens its National Hockey League season vs. the Montreal Canadiens at the MTS Centre.
The Winnipeg Sun is reporting that Scheifele, chosen seventh overall in the NHL entry draft in June, will receive $925,000 in salary (including signing bonus) and performance bonuses that reach $2.1 million over the length of the deal (for an average of $700,000 per season), leaving him with an annual salary cap hit of $1,625,000.
The 18-year-old centre and graduate of Barrie Colts of the Ontario Hockey League led the Jets in scoring with four goals and eight points in five NHL preseason games.
“It’s nice to get these deals done. When kids are 18 years old and they’ve got to deal with something like this, it plays on their mind,” Schefele’s agent, Rob Hooper, told the Sun. “Now it gives Mark a little bit of breathing space and he can just focus on the hockey.”
Scheifele can play up to nine games with the Jets, who then must decide to keep him for the remainder of the year or return him to Barrie.
