Pregame: Rangers Go for Four Straight Against Flyers

The New York Rangers have not been playing their best hockey since last weekend’s All-Star break, as they fell to the New Jersey Devils in a heartbreaking shootout on Tuesday, and then managed to defeat the Buffalo Sabres a night later, 1-0, despite a very poor showing from the team in that game. As we all know, these games that follow All-Star Weekend are the most crucial to the club’s short-term future since they will decide the team’s fate as far as playoffs go. Through two games here, the Blueshirts have not looked like a playoff team in my opinion, but that will need to change when they host their most hated rivals, the Philadelphia Flyers, in a Winter Classic rematch this afternoon at Madison Square Garden.

In three prior meetings with Philadelphia this season, New York has gathered six points in the standings by winning each game in regulation time. The first came on November 26, when the Rangers shut the Flyers out, 2-0, at MSG. Then, just a few weeks prior to…

Game Preview: New York Rangers vs Philadelphia Flyers

TODAY’S GAME: The Rangers will face-off against the Philadelphia Flyers today at Madison Square Garden (1:00 p.m.; TV: MSG Network; Radio: 1050 ESPN Radio), to begin a three-game homestand. The Blueshirts currently sit atop the Eastern Conference standings, and rank second in the league overall, with a record of 32-12-5 (69 pts). The Rangers enter [...]

Heave Ho Four in a Row

That is what the New York Rangers will be looking to do this afternoon at Madison Square Garden when they take on the Philadelphia Flyers.

The teams have met three times already with the Blueshirts coming away with three wins, including winning the Winter Classic by a score of 3-2. The Blueshirts have also beaten the Flyers twice on home ice this season.

There is no doubt that the Flyers are going to come out as a hungry hockey club. In yesterday’s 6-4 loss to the New Jersey Devils at home, the Flyers gave the Devils a 6-0 lead before coming back to score four goals in the third period to make it an exciting hockey game.

This is a Flyers team that has a lot of offense. Guys like Claude Giroux, Scott Hartnell, Wayne Simmonds, Jaromir Jagr and Matt Read can all put the puck in the net. Hartnell leads the club with 25 goals and Giroux is right behind with 20.

With that in mind, the Blueshirts are going to need to be ready to battle. The club is coming off a hard fought 1-0 wi…

Rinaldo Fined $5K For Two Incidents Today

NEW YORK (February 4, 2012)—Philadelphia Flyers center Zac Rinaldo has been fined a total of $5,000 as a result of two separate incidents during NHL Game No. 768 against the New Jersey Devils Saturday afternoon in Philadelphia, the National Hockey League’s Department of Player Safety announced today.

Rinaldo was fined $2,500, the maximum allowed under the Collective Bargaining Agreement, for his late hit on Devils center Jacob Josefson at 12:51 of the second period. Rinaldo received a minor penalty for interference.

Rinaldo also was fined the maximum $2,500 for his dangerous trip of Devils left wing Zach Parise after the whistle at 11:38 of the third period. No penalty was assessed on the play.

You can watch the trip here if you missed it earlier.

Ilya Kovalchuk Drops Brayden Schenn With Right Hook During Flyers-Devils Brawl (Video)

Brayden Schenn is a familiar foe to Bruins fans who remember his bout with Chris Kelly earlier this year. However, he may want to tone down his fighting judging from the way his most recent one went. Ilya Kovalchuk caught Schenn square in the jaw with a nasty right hook to send the Flyers center down and out during a fight on Saturday. The whole things got started after a late slew foot by Zac Rinaldo on Zach Parise and both teams gathered in a scrum. Schenn and Kovalchuk separated themselves from the bunch, and the fists started flying. Check…

Devils hold off Flyers for win

Kurtis Foster scored a pair of power-play goals, and the New Jersey Devils held on for a 6-4 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday afternoon.

Ilya Kovalchuk, Dainius Zubrus, Zach Parise and Alexei Ponikarovsky also had goals for the Devils, who have won three in a row. New Jersey’s special teams scored three times on the power play and once short-handed.

Down 6-0 to start the third period, the Flyers stormed back to make it close. Wayne Simmonds, Jaromir Jagr, Claude Giroux and Jake Voracek had Philadelphia’s goals.

The Flyers were 14 for 14 on the penalty kill against the Devils in the first three meetings this season. The road team has won each of the four games between the teams.

Sergei Bobrovsky allowed a career-worst six goals on 23 shots before getting replaced by Ilya Bryzgalov in the second period.

The Devils scored four goals in a span of 2:34 from the end of the first into the second to take a 5-0 lead.

Coming off an impressive 4-1 win that snapped Nashville’s five-game winning streak, the Flyers were looking to move ahead of the Eastern Conference-leading New York Rangers with a pair of wins this weekend. They’ll look to rebound against the Rangers at Madison Square Garden on Sunday.

The injury-depleted Devils improved to 7-3-1 in their last 11 games, but they almost let this one slip away.

After Kovalchuk flattened rookie Brayden Schenn in a rare fight for the Devils’ three-time All-Star, the knockout seemed to fire up the Flyers instead.

Giroux and Voracek scored 51 seconds apart to cut the deficit to 6-4. But the Devils shut Philadelphia down over the last 6:29.

Foster scored on a one-timer during a two-man advantage to get the scoring barrage started.

New Jersey’s special teams then took control of the game late in the period when Kovalchuk scored a short-handed goal. Zubrus set it up by stealing the puck from Giroux in the Devils’ zone and starting a two-on-one break. Kovalchuk fired a wrister past Bobrovsky for a 2-0 lead with 57 seconds left in the period.

Flyers coach Peter Laviolette was irate that a penalty wasn’t called on Zubrus for tripping Giroux. He screamed at a referee from the bench.

His frustration was reflected in the chippy play of his players. But the Devils took advantage as Zubrus lifted a backhander past Bobrovsky with :03 left in the period to give New Jersey a commanding 3-0 lead.

The Devils opened the second period on the power play as Scott Hartnell was called for high-sticking at the end of the first. Parise knocked in his own rebound on the man-advantage to make it 4-0.

Ponikarovsky tipped in a behind-the-net pass from Steve Bernier for a 5-0 lead less than a minute later. Foster sent Bobrovsky to the bench after scoring on a slap shot midway through the second.

Simmonds started Philadelphia’s comeback bid with his 16th goal. Jagr then scored his first goal since Dec. 29 to cut it to 6-2.

Notes: The Devils were missing defensemen Henrik Tallinder (leg) and Adam Larsson (back) and centers Travis Zajac (Achilles), Ryan Carter (hand) and Adam Henrique (groin). .. The Flyers again were without Danny Briere and James van Riemsdyk. Both have been sidelined with concussions. … Patrik Elias has 32 goals and 41 assists in 74 regular-season games against Philadelphia. … The Devils lead the NHL with 12 short-handed goals, including three from Kovalchuk. … Hedberg has started in place of Martin Brodeur the last five times the Devils have played in Philadelphia. He’s 9-10-1 vs. the Flyers. … Brodeur started New Jersey’s previous seven games. … Simmonds tied a career-high with his 16th goal. He had 16 for the Los Angeles Kings in 2009-10.

Whoa! Ilya Kovalchuk drops Brayden Schenn

Who says scorers can’t fight in hockey?Early Saturday afternoon the Philadelphia Flyers and the New Jersey squared off on the ice, with the Devils winning 6-4.At one point, there was a fairly big scrum on the ice after Devils forward Zack Parise appears to get tripped by the Flyers Zac Rinaldo.Lots of square dancing began and at least initially it appeared to just be some wrestling. But away from the pile, Mr. Schenn and Mr. Kovalchuk ended up dropping the gloves. And well…let’s just say, it wasn’t the smartest thing Schenn has ever done.Check out the video from HockeyFights.net:

(Video) Philadelphia Flyers Forward Scott Hartnell Discusses the All-Star Game with Rant Sports

Yesterday Philadelphia Flyers power forward Scott Hartnell spent a couple of minutes with me and talked about his time at the 2012 NHL All-Star Game.
Hartnell finally got a well deserved trip to the All-Star Game when Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews couldn’t attend due to injury.
The beginning of the interview you hear me mention the toque because right next to us Ilya Bryzgalov was asking Hartsy why he didn’t have a souvenir for me.  Than towards the middle he stopped the interview for a minute because I believe it was Max Talbot was throwing tape balls at Hartnell.  That is also when Flyers announcer Jim Jackson chimed in with, “Where was he aiming?”
Also, I asked Hartsy about his first pick speech, which he says he didn’t think he said it.  I have the tweet right here and yes I knew he was joking all along about it.

Tim Panaccio: Look at Bryz’ Last 5 Games

Amid all the good things the Flyers did against Nashville:

- power play scores for 5th straight game
- penalty kill has a momentum changing appearance
- Wayne Simmonds scores 2 goals and is within 1 of his career-high (16)
- rookie Matt Read turns defense into offense into a goal

Amid all that … did you notice that beleaguered goalie Ilya Bryzgalov gave up just 1 goal for the 4th time…

Flyers And Jagr’s Agent Had Preliminary Discussions

We already know Jaromir Jagr loves philadelphia. He has made that very clear. The good news today is that the Flyers and Jagr’s agent have had preliminary discussions on an extension.

“I’ll be talking to [Flyers GM] Paul Holmgren again within a week probably,” Svoboda told ESPN.com Wednesday. Jagr, who turns 40 on Feb. 15, signed a one-year, $3.3-million deal last summer. He’ll be an unrestricted free agent on July 1, but there’s obvious interest in staying in Philadelphia if both sides can come to agreement. ”It’s a good situation for him there,” said Svoboda.

Flyers snap Predators’ winning streak

Wayne Simmonds is outplaying the former captain traded away for him.

Simmonds scored two goals, Matt Read and Claude Giroux also had goals, and the Philadelphia Flyers snapped Nashville’s five-game winning streak with a 4-1 victory over the Predators on Thursday night.

Ilya Bryzgalov made 26 saves to earn his 175th career win, and the Flyers finally played just 60 minutes. They went to a shootout in their previous three contests, losing twice.

Simmonds was acquired along with Brayden Schenn and a second-round pick in the blockbuster deal that sent Mike Richards to Los Angeles last summer. Simmonds has 15 goals and 14 assists for 29 points. Richards has 14 and 12 for 26.

”His confidence is growing,” Flyers coach Peter Laviolette said. ”He’s a difficult person to get the puck from. He holds onto the puck and makes plays.”

Ryan Suter had Nashville’s lone goal. The Predators had won nine of their last 10 games and entered with the NHL’s best record since Dec. 28, going 13-2.

”I thought we came out and played hard,” Suter said. ”The first (goal) kind of deflected off a stick, but that stuff happens. We just have to battle through it.”

Simmonds gave the Flyers a 1-0 lead with 4:19 left in the first period. His turnaround wrister sailed through traffic, off a defender and past goaltender Anders Lindback.

Simmonds’ power-play goal with 4:41 left in the game sealed the win after the Predators cut the deficit to 2-1. Simmonds scored off a rebound of a shot by Giroux, who added an empty-netter when Jaromir Jagr passed up an easy goal.

”We got great depth,” said Simmonds, who plays on the third line. ”From lines one to four, anyone can score. It’s great to have depth.”

It was a much-needed home win for Philadelphia in a matchup of two teams that came in second in their division and fourth in their conference. The Flyers improved to 12-7-4 at the Wells Fargo Center.

A few minutes after the Flyers failed to capitalize on a two-man advantage, Read extended the lead to 2-0 with an unassisted goal in the second period. Read stole the puck from Kevin Klein near Philadelphia’s blue line and started a breakaway. He faked a pass to Harry Zolnierczyk and fired a slap shot from the left faceoff circle that went through Lindback’s legs.

Read, an undrafted free agent, leads NHL rookies with 16 goals. The 25-year-old forward is strengthening his bid to win the Calder Trophy with every goal.

”We kill a five-on-three and usually the team that makes the kill gets the momentum, but we gave it right back to them when they scored,” Predators coach Barry Trotz said.

Nashville’s Craig Smith nearly tied it at 1 in the second period when his one-timer hit the post. Seconds later, Bryzgalov made the save on Smith’s point-blank shot from inside the right faceoff circle.

Smith finally got the Predators a tally when he set up Suter’s goal with 11:23 remaining. Smith sent a crossing pass between Flyers defenseman Andrej Meszaros’ legs to Suter, who scored his first goal in 27 games to get Nashville within 2-1.

Lindback started instead of Pekka Rinne, who has won 10 straight starts and 13 of 14.

Bryzgalov has started six of Philadelphia’s last eight games. The eccentric goalie hasn’t lived up to expectations in his first year with Philadelphia after signing a $51 million, nine-year contract. He entered the game with a 2.92 goals-against average and a mediocre .896 save percentage.

”He looks really sharp,” Laviolette said. ”He’s focused. He’s worked really hard in practice and often that reflects in games.”

Notes: The Flyers acquired minor-league RW Matt Ford from Washington for D Kevin Marshall. Ford was assigned to the AHL’s Adirondack Phantoms. … Simmonds has goals in both games vs. Nashville. … The Predators are 6-7-3 vs. Philadelphia. … The Flyers and Predators have more trades (17) with each other than games played (16). Nashville entered the NHL in 1999. … Smith and Patric Hornqvist have points in five straight games. … Suter’s last goal was on Nov. 23. … Giroux hadn’t scored in 12 games since Jan. 2.

Flyers send D Marshall to Capitals for RW Ford

The Philadelphia Flyers acquired right wing Matt Ford from the Washington Capitals in exchange for defenseman Kevin Marshall.
Ford was assisgned to Adirondack, the AHL affiliate of Philadelphia. He had 10 goals and 18 assists in 39 games for Washington’s AHL affiliate at Hersey.
Marshall did not have a point in 10 games with the Flyers this season.

Flyers, Capitals exchange minor leaguers

The Philadelphia Flyers have acquired right wing Matt Ford from the Washington Capitals for defenseman Kevin Marshall in a trade of minor leaguers.

Ford had 10 goals and 28 points in 39 games for Washington’s AHL affiliate, the Hershey Bears. He will be assigned to the Adirondack Phantoms. Ford has 50 goals and 100 points in 190 career AHL games with Hershey, Lake Erie and Hartford.

Marshall appeared in 10 games for the Flyers this season. He had two goals and three assists in 32 games for Adirondack this season.

The deal was announced Thursday.

Flyers Trade Kevin Marshall for Matt Ford; Trade is More Than Meets the Eye

Today the Philadelphia Flyers traded defenseman Kevin Marshall for Washington Capitals prospect Matt Ford. This is being touted as an AHL move, but this trade goes deeper than that.
I am hearing a lot of people complain that the Flyers are trading away a defenseman when that is what they are lacking.  Clearly why would GM Paul Holmgren make such a stupid, boneheaded move?  The answer is simple…he isn’t done.
You have to think with this trade that Philadelphia is clearing some room to bring in another d-man.  Look for Homer to make a move here in the next week or two.  Look for the Flyers to be heavily scouting some other blueliners to bring in at the deadline.
